Foundation board gains coal experience

FOUNDATION Coal has added nearly 50 years of coal mining and transportation experience to its board with the appointment of Robert Scharp and P Michael Giftos onto its board of directors, the company announced Wednesday.

They replace Hans Mande and Stephen Ko, who resigned in October this year.

Giftos is also a board member for Pacer International and has held various executive positions for CSX Transportation from 1985 until his retirement in 2004.

Scharp, also chairman of Shall Canada’s Mining Advisory Council, is on the board of directors of Bucyrus International. His past professional endeavors include Phelps Dodge, Kerr-McGee (including management positions at Jacobs Ranch, Galatia and Kerr-McGee Coal), Shell Coal and Anglo Coal Australia.

Maryland-based Foundation, who was named “Coal Company of the Year” at the seventh annual Platts Global Energy Awards earlier this month, also recently reported a strong third quarter with a net income of $US21.6 million over a loss of $US5.9 million a year ago.

The company produces coal from 13 coal mines and related facilities in various US states including Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois and Wyoming.
