Chevron North River coal mine still out of action

TWO weeks after being partially flooded Chevron Mining's North River Coal Mine remains out of act...

Staff Reporter

The Tuscaloosa News reports the mine - in Berry, Alabama - has been idled since the flooding on October 10 that cut off access to the longwall.

Water entered the mine through a damaged seal wall and operations were suspended immediately until the water can be drained.

No workers were injured in the flooding and all 400 of the mine's staff remain off work with pay while the problem is being fixed.

According to the Tuscaloosa News Chevron Mining has not indicated when the mine will be back in production.

The mine was formerly operated by Chevron Corp subsidiary Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining. In early September, P&M merged with another Chevron subsidiary, Molycorp, to form Chevron Mining.
