Victim Joe Frederickson, 41, was believed to be in the coal bunker room of the plant at the time of the 9.20am blast at Minnesota Power’s Taconite Harbor Energy Center in Schroeder.

A Minnesota Power spokeswoman told Associated Press the coal bunker was being filled at the time of the explosion and Frederickson, an 11-year facility worker, was the only one in the area at the time.

Fire, company and state officials have reportedly said the cause was unclear. An investigation is underway.

One of two generation units at the plant remained idle from Monday night, according to local media.

The blast is the second at the facility in about 10 years. A similar explosion and fire rocked Taconite Harbor in 2002.
