Australian coal shipments generally up in August

Coal shipments through Port Kembla, Port Waratah and Abbot Point all increased in August compared with August 1999, while Hay Point throughput declined.

Australian Coal Shipping statistics for August

 

Central Queensland Coal Associates’ (CQCA) Hay Point Coal Terminal shipped 2.18 million tonnes during August, a decrease of 11.5% on August 1999’s figure of 2.46Mt. In the calendar year to date Hay Point has shipped about 18.14Mt. Hay Point typically services mines including Goonyella, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Riverside, and South Walker Creek.

 

During August, BHP shipped 38,120 tonnes through Gladstone, 130,769t through Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, 353,554t to domestic power stations in Queensland and 897,100t from Gladstone's RG Tanna Coal Terminal. In total, BHP shipped 3.60Mt from Queensland in the month of August 2000.

 

Port Kembla Coal Terminal shipped 887,546t, up 70% on the 522,000t shipped in August 1999. In the calendar year to date Port Kembla has shipped 5.53Mt.

 

Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) shipped just over 6Mt in August. The PWCS Carrington terminal moved 2.09Mt of this total with the balance of 4.01Mt being loaded at the PWCS Kooragang terminal.

 

In the last five months, PWCS has shipped 29.80Mt, a 6% increase on the 28.11Mt shipped for the same period in 1999. At the end of August the total tonnage of 6.10Mt was shipped in 75 vessels for an average shipment size of approximately 81,292t and an average turnaround time of 7.4 days.

 

PWCS received 6.04Mt of coal during August. Of this total, 5.89Mt were received by rail. PWCS-Carrington terminal also received about 70,000t by road and about 87,000t by ship, while PWCS-Kooragang received tonnage only by rail.

 

The bulk of the exports went to Japan, which received 2.7Mt steaming and 889,865t coking coal. Taiwan took 531,340t of steaming and 318,876t of coking, while Korea took 441,403t of steaming and 326,365t of coking. Other buyers in August included South America, Israel, Europe, Malaysia, China, Indonesia and New Caledonia. Of the August throughput, 75% was steaming coal while the balance 25% was coking coal.

 

MIM's Abbot Point shipped 988,000t for August, up 51% on August 1999. Calendar year to date (Jan-Aug 2000), Abbot Point has shipped 6.75Mt, which equates to 10.12Mt annualised. Abbot Point services the Queensland mines of Newlands and Collinsville.
