The body was retrieved from the mine early Wednesday after water was pumped out but 55 others are still missing, according to official news agency Xinhua.

“The rescue operation encountered great difficulties because the owner of the mine destroyed all the design drawings and other documents of the mine after the accident,”Xinhua reported.

The Xinjing Coal Mine in Shanxi Province was flooded on May 18 while 266 workers were underground, and 210 managed to escape.

Efforts to pump water out of the shaft did not begin until five days after the flood, due to lack of necessary rescue equipment and a lack of power supply to run the water pumps.

Since the incident, 19 people including the mine owner have been detained by police, according to Xinhua.

Efforts to retrieve the remaining bodies are continuing.
