Southland turns in record tonnage

GYMPIE Gold Hunter Valley based Southland longwall mine appears to be through the worst of difficult times.

Staff Reporter

The mine produced 225,557 run-of-mine tonnes during March, which is a monthly production record for the operation. The colliery has consistently produced about 50,000 tonnes per week for the past five weeks.

Gympie said the turnaround was due to several initiatives, including changing the mining horizon, introducing a continuous production roster, improving the face hydraulic integrity and overall shield stiffness. The introduction of Rocsil cavity filling foam has resulted in greatly reduced downtime repairing cavities. The single continuous miner unit also produced a record month with 570 metres advanced.
